i ended my last report telling you about the small fracture found in my heel which i got when jumping of the surfboard in brasil during my first surf lession. bad luck and really stupid when wanting to travel. 6 weeks rest was what the doctors consulted me, so i obviously had to change my plan of travelling within argentina in march. after two weeks in way too warm buenos aires in which i really couldn´t do a thing (even the 500m walk to the internet cafe were hard to manage), i decided to accept the invitation of ale, a friend from barcelona who i just got to know a couple of weeks before leaving barcelona, to go to visit him in uruguay. taking ferry and bus from buenos aires it took me only 6 hours to get to PUNTE DEL ESTE in uruguay, "the" place to be for all high society from buenos aires and surroundings during the summer. everyo! ne who has a name, or at least is aiming to get one, is gathering in punta del este during january and february, the prices are comparable to expensive places in europe such as st. tropez or marbella and after february all big magazines show pictures of all famous people having spent their vacacion there.
the rest of the 10 months of the year the area around punta del este is a lovely and very calm small town with beautiful houses and nature, lovely beaches and this very special peaceful atmosphere which i noticed and liked straight away. ale was visiting his friends and family for 2 months and since his parents are working in a real estate agency, they are living in a beautiful house in PUNTA BALLENA (next to punta del este and a lot nicer) set a little bit higher so you have a view over the sea from the terrace and pool. the setting of the house and the house itself were magic and i saw some of the most beautiful sunsets sitting in a hammoc! k on the terrace. ale and his parents welcomed me in such a nice way t hat i immediately felt home. also getting to know ale´s friends wasn´t hard at all. the uruguayans are really nice and warm people, offering a lot (even to people who they don´t know) and just being very relaxed, natural and generous. in my opinion they are more humble and calmer than the argentinians although both cultures aren´t that different. except from "fighting" about where "dulce de leche", "gardel" (the famous tango singer) and "mate" are coming from (uruguay or argentina?), they both speak this nice sounding "j" when pronouncing "ll" and "y". "Jo me Jamo andrea y quiero comer un bocadiJo de poJo, Ja!..." if you spanish speaker know what i mean.... :-) i adopted their way of speaking very fast and think i did quite well although being still laught about a lot when pronouncing certain things... (si, si ales !!! (both), guille, santi & co.!!!) bueno, there i was and all of a sudden my foot problem wasn´t important anymore or at least more! easy to handle. ale´s friends were great and we basicaly spend all days together. they were all very much into surfing so we went surfing or kite surfing whenever there were waves or wind. while the guys were trying to catch a wave, the girls were chatting and drinking MATE at the beach. or we all just met at the pool at ale´s house or at the beach, playing cards or just chilling out, there was always something to do. at night we had a lot of asados or cooked together (thanks to the great master of asados and cook santi!!!). sounds like a lot of fun? well, it was and i really enjoyed being in such nice company after having travelled so long by myself.
since ale is a diving instructure, i decided to learn how to dive and did my "paddy open water" course with him. we practiced in the pool and from the very first moment i liked the feeling of being under water a lot. unfortunatly there isn´t a lot to see in the sea in u! ruguay but i can´t wait to go diving in thailand in june!
althou gh most of the tourists already left punta del este and the season was slowly coming to an end there was still quite some party going on in punta del este. ale told me that TANIA VULCANO, a very famous and great dj, spining in ibiza all summer, who actually is from uruguay!!!!! was in punta del este and would celebrate her own birthday in a club spining only for her friends. so there i was, on a wednesday night, in a small cool club called SODA in uruguay, punta del este, with aproximately 40-50 other people, all dancing to the great house music tania was spining that night. no entrance fee, totally relaxed and intimate atmosphere and tania just celbrating with us. a great night!!!!!! carla, alex, champi and almu (ibiza team, we love you!!! ;-), you would have loved it as well!!!
i also visited montevideo, the capital of uruguay where i stayed with a friend for one night. montevideo, 1,5 hrs away from punta del este, is a nice small city next to the sea. for ! a capital it´s very relaxed and calm. i liked its center and the location next to sea and beach a lot. paty, a friend of a friend of mine from barcelona (thank you very much santi for passing me her contact and telling her about me), welcomed me in the same nice way as ale and his parents did, showing me her city and offering me to stay as long as i wanted and even to join her and her husband to a nice small village by the coast where they spent their holidays! concerning hospitality i really learned a lot when being in uruguay and i will be glad to offer it back whenever they want to come to visit me in barcelona or berlin.
