3 weeks in brasil. they passed really fast. tomorrow i am flying back to buenos aires. at this moment i am sitting in an internet cafe in manaus in the middle of the amazonas. yesterday i got back from the jungle where i stayed 3 days. but lets start from the beginning.
on february, 7th i flew to salvador just for the last 2 days of carneval. in salvador you still feel a lot of african influence as it was the last city where slaves were still brought to from africa. most of the population is black and without a lot of money. people say that this is the best place in brasil to experience the authentic carneval and after being there for 2 days i also understood why. its not like in rio a carneval made for the tourists and people with lots of money to pay to get in. the salvador carneval is taking place in the streets, its made from the people in the street for the people in the street. everyone is happy, dancing and celebrating. the poorest street seller as well as the better off`s. that`s what i liked and although i was more observing than really `living`the carneval since i didnt buy a t-shirt to be able to directly dance behind the big trucks, i liked it and had a lot of fun. some friends and me were dancing 3 hours behind the trucks and on the street trying to imitate some of the samba steps. we had a lot of fun and the atmosphere was great although it was more than once just pouring down and the rain just wouldnt stop for hours. but as i indicated, salvador felt quite poor and also quite dirty. during carneval the smell of pie was almost everywhere (due to the lack of restrooms and heat) and outside the areas that were protected (directly behind the trucks) you really had to be careful and watch out. in the beginning i was annoyed being talked to by men and didnt feel very confortable but in the end i noticed that it was not ment bad and that they would also adress brasilian women or just touching them when walking by. it`s carneval and people are more relaxed (and probably also more drunk) and everything is `allowed`. i got explained that in these days you could also just kiss someone and move on with the crowd and i saw it happening more than once as well. an eye contact, a smile, a kiss (a real one) and bye, dancing on... met a guy from rio who explained me about this `tradition`and tried to convince me to kiss him. without success... so to resume the carneval in salvador, nice atmosphere, especially behind the trucks, lots and lots of people, unfortunaltly bad rain the days when i was there and next time i would definatly come with a group of friends and buy a t-shirt to be able to really get into the carneval feeling. then i think it can just be a really great the experience. ah, yep and next time i also wouldnt have an alcohol-free month in order to enjoy the great and cheap caipirinas being sold everywhere. for me it was ok not to drink this time because and it also was safer.
i had 2 more days in salvador. the first day i looked at the old part of the city, pelourinho, where you do find a lot of nice churches (salvador has more than 360 churches, a different one for each day of the year) and also some nice old colonial style buildings but most of salvador is pretty run down. anyway it was nice to see it but one day is actually enough. the second day i planned to do a boat tour to some nearby tropical islands. unfortunatly the tour was cancelled due to the bad rain. after having had a nice dinner at senac, a restaurant of a famous cooking school, offering a buffet with 40 tradicional dishes, i spent most of the next day with bad stomack pains in bed so in the end it wasnt too bad that the tour got concelled. the food at senac was great but may be i shouldnt have tried all 40 dishes at one night, guess it was just too much for my stomach.
i was pretty happy about leaving salvador, next stop was natal the coast up north where i wanted to relax and enjoy the beautiful beaches.
i landed in natal and straight went on to pipa where it was supposed to be very nice and layed back. i prefered staying in smaller towns by the coast than in bigger cities such as natal (although its supposed to be very nice there as well) and pipa was just a paradies. check out www.pipa.br.com
