after coming back to buenos aires four times after each one of my journeys it in the end almost felt like coming back home. buenos aires, the city which before starting my travel sounded so abstract and far away in the end became really familiar and part of my 4 months in south america. and the better i got to know it, the more i liked it! leaving buenos aires finally for good wasn´t easy and i am sure i will come back one day, hopefully soon.
i dont wanna write a lot about all the typical things one should do and look at when being in buenos aires as they are explained in detail in each guide (the lonely planet south america travelled with me the whole 4 months and i can highly recommend it!).
there is for example SAN TELMO, the ´tango´ district with its sunday performances and all its antiques stores where you can buy great furniture and decoration fo! r very little money. its just a pitty that the stuff doesn´t fit into the suitcase or backpack... its nice to go to san telmo on a sunday to breeth in some of the tango atmosphere but its very touristy and i preferred walking around calmly on a normal weekday.
LA BOCA, the working class district is considered as one of buenos aires worth areas and for tourists it might get quite dangerous. since i explored it with my friends i didnt notice any danger and enjoyed the colorful houses and the joyful atmosphere a lot. although it is a very poor district, it certainly maintained a lot of charme! the highlight for me was to visit a game of the famous BOCA JUNIORS soccer team in which Diego Maradona played once. Maradona is argentina´s hero and despite of all his drug affairs is being admired as god. ´god´ himself visited the match and was welcomed by big standing-ovations. amazing, the boca fans are not without reason called the 11th (or 12th??) p! layer. they sing, scream, shout nonstop during the whole game! th e amtmosphere was amazing and maradona was just standing at the oposite site of where we were. i could see him without any problem and he was a lot of the times waving to the crowd. boca won against rosario 4:1 and the match contained all possible emotions including a held penalty kick of the boca goal keeper. it was a great sunday afternoon and after the match we enjoyed some good pizza which you can find almost everywhere in la boca since many argentinians living there have italian blood in them.
buenos aires is huge and has more than 12 million inhabitants. there is not only one but several centers and to take a bus from one end to the other takes a couple of hours. it has a metro called subte but unfortunatly the trains are not really well conected but all run parallel to each other which sometimes when you need to ´cross´ doesn´t bring you anywhere. the best way to get around are the ´colectivos´, really old and simple buses that run very f! requently and only cost 10c per ride. also taxis and remises (private owned taxis) are a good transportation. i was surprised in what old cars people still take you. sitting in a remise it sometimes felt like touching the road and it also happened to me that the remise broke down before we got to the destination. another thing that really lacks developement are buenos aires side streets! a desaster! one hole after the other. its so uncomfortable to drive. the good things about it is that the cars can´t really speed up a lot. but they still drive quite fast and since most of the smaller crossings work without traffic lights but by ´right before left´, i was always a bit worried that the other cars wouldn´t stop as approaching the crossings very fast and without really slowing down...
